Live fire exercises are the pinnacle of being an 11C Infantry Mortarmen. Safety is an essential element of successful live fire exercises. Mortarmen from 2-153rd and 1-153rd infantry battalions prepared for 81mm Illumination night fire at OP2 on Robinson Maneuver Training Center, Ark. after an intense weather front pushed through on June 9, 1024. The Fire Direction Officer (FDO) on OP2, SSG Heathwaite, conducted cross center sector fire to ensure rounds impacted safely within target area. After the first successful impact, Heathwaite assessed the lingering weather conditions and potential impacts to the safe execution of the live fire. Despite the excitement surrounding live fires, Heathwaite made the call to postpone the remaining illumination rounds until the next nights mission. Safety is key and Heathwaite’s safety call ensured Soliders safety was top priority.
