U.S. Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC), conduct a professional military education tour on the Battle of Belleau Wood at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau, France, June 10, 2024. The tour was conducted to honor the legacy of service members who gave their lives in defense of the United States and European Allies during World War I. The Battle of Belleau Wood lasted from 1 to 26 June, 1918 and was where the nickname “Teufel Hunden,” or devil dog, was given to the U.S. Marines by the Germans. The Wasp Amphibious Readiness Group-24th MEU (SOC) is conducting operations in U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of operations to support high-end warfighting exercises while demonstrating speed and agility in a dynamic security environment.
