Norfolk, Va. (May 23, 2024) – Military Sealift Command’s fleet replenishment oiler USNS Joshua Humphreys (T-AO 188) received the 2023 Capt. David M. Cook award for food service excellence in the Medium Afloat category at the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation’s (NRAEF) annual Military Foodservice Awards dinner and ceremony, held at the Hilton Palmer House Hotel in Chicago on May 17. Humphreys has won, the last three consecutive years, in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Accepting the award for Joshua Humphreys was Ship Master, Capt. Patrick T. Christian, centered above, alongside Logistics Deputy Director Matthew Sweeney (left) and Director of Maritime Operations Robert Hein (right).
Christian said he was not surprised that his food service team won its third consecutive award. “I was not surprised because they consistently produce high quality delicious meals which are partnered with excellent friendly service.” Having healthy food options aboard Joshua Humphreys is paramount he said. “Healthy crew members means more productivity; and to be honest, it means happier crew members. This command philosophy adds to mission success.” Food Service Operations Manager Jerry Holley added to Christian’s sentiments. “Having healthy food options is the key to readiness whether CIVMARs are providing services to the Navy underway or spending precious time with their family.”
