Norfolk, Va. (May 23, 2024) – Military Sealift Command’s dry cargo and ammunition vessel USNS William McLean (T-AKE 12) received the 2023 Capt. David M. Cook award for food service excellence in the Large Afloat category at the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation’s (NRAEF) annual Military Foodservice Awards dinner and ceremony, held at the Hilton Palmer House Hotel in Chicago on May 17. This is the ship’s first win. Accepting the award for William McLean was Chief Steward Alex B. Esteban, centered above, alongside Logistics Deputy Director Matthew Sweeney (left) and Director of Maritime Operations Robert Hein (right). Esteban said he had a strong incline that his vessel would win its first award and is enormously proud of both his team and leadership.
Born and raised in the Philippines, Esteban has been with MSC since 2007. He enjoys every phase of food preparation, from menu planning to ordering the right provisions to support the MSC 35 Day Cycle Menu with healthy options. “Having healthy food options is the key to readiness whether CIVMARs are providing services to the Navy underway or spending precious time with their family,” said Food Service Operations Manager Jerry Holley.
The Captain David M. Cook Food Service Award honors MSC's former director of logistics, Capt. David M. Cook. While serving as MSC’s director of Logistics from 1995 until 1998, he was instrumental in enhancing every aspect of food service operations at MSC, from training for food service staff to nutrition education for ship crews.
