Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Nurses celebrated the 116th birthday of the United States Navy Nurse Corps in Clark Auditorium on Monday, May 13, 2023.
The guest speaker was Navy Captain Raymond Bonds, NC, USN, the Career Planner for the Navy Nurse Corps. The ceremonial birthday cake cutting was done by Navy CDR Theresa Lavoie, NC, Assistant Chief of Staff at Walter Reed, and Navy ENS Dhana McKinney, NC. After the ceremony, attendees were treated to displays of Navy Nurse memorabilia including photos, uniforms and other items.
The United States Navy Nurse Corps was established in 1908 by an act of Congress. Although women had unofficially served as nurses aboard ships and in hospitals since the early 1800s, the establishment of the Corps formally recognized these women as official members of the Navy. The Corps was all female until 1965, as male enlisted personnel were classified as hospital corpsman up to that time. Today, the Nurse Corps continues as a prominent part of the Navy Medicine establishment.
