To honor history and heroes, the 173rd Airborne Brigade stood on sacred ground at Ponti sul Mincio on May 1, 2024 to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Casale — the final World War II battle on Italian soil. Each year, on May 1, the community of Ponti sul Mincio gathers to remember the Battle of Monte Casale. They pay special homage to Richard Carlson, the American soldier who died far from his home in Minnesota on the rugged slopes of Monte Casale.
