Staff Sgt. Angel Garcia, a combat engineer with the 59th Combat Engineer Company - Armored, 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, poses for a photo in front of the motor vessel GREEN OCEAN, Friday, Apr. 19, 2024 at the Port of Kalundborg, Denmark.
Garcia is the hazardous materials noncommissioned officer in charge and the supervisor for the team selected by his unit to retrieve equipment shipped to Denmark in support of exercise Immediate Response, one of three linked exercises in the DEFENDER Europe series.
His role as the HAZMAT NCO requires him to ensure all equipment, vehicles, and containers are properly labeled for transport. Garcia noted the ease of the off-load process, working with U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from the 793rd Movement Control Team, as well as Danish partners.
"It was smooth and organized," said Garcia. "It surprised me."
This is the first year the Port of Kalundborg is involved in the DEFENDER series of exercises -U.S. Army Europe and Africa's largest annual training event. It is a three-part exercise, designed to demonstrate the ability of U.S. forces to rapidly deploy in support of ally and partner nations. (U.S. Army Reserve photo by Staff Sgt. Jessica Forester)
