Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III speaks with Army Mariners from the 8th Theater Sustainment Command and other U.S. Army Pacific Command Soldiers during the secretary’s visit to Honolulu, Hawaii, May 3, 2024. After Austin provided the group insight into his priorities, Soldiers asked the secretary questions on topics ranging from educational benefits to leadership advice. His advice to the Soldiers was “Be ready,” because no one can predict the hour or day a crisis may require their service. Earlier that day, Austin met with the top defense leaders from Australia, Japan, and the Philippines and presided over the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command change of command ceremony.
