Secretary of Defense Llyod J. Austin III presents U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Alexis Furbert, an intelligence analyst with the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, a coin for excellence during his visit to Honolulu, Hawaii, May 3, 2024. Furbert was one of five Soldiers presented with a coin. Prior to presenting coins, Austin offered Army Mariners from 8th Theater Sustainment Command and other U.S. Army Pacific Command Soldiers insight into his priorities. Soldiers also asked the secretary questions on topics ranging from educational benefits to leadership advice. His advice to the Soldiers was “Be ready,” because no one can predict the hour or day a crisis may require their service. Earlier that day, Austin met with the top defense leaders from Australia, Japan, and the Philippines and presided over the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command change of command ceremony.
