As of July 3, 2003, the Aspen Fire northeast of Tucson, Arizona, had grown to more than 44, 000 acres and was about 60 percent contained. On Tuesday, northwest winds drove the fire southward, and flames crept over a ridgeline onto the front range of the Santa Catalina Mountains, which are visible form Tucson. This image shows the actively burning areas of the fire marked with red outlines. The image and fire detections were captured by the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite on July 3, 2003.
