NORFOLK, Va. (March 17, 2024) Lt. Joshua Henderson, U.S. Navy chaplain, conducts a baptism ceremony for his son on the flight deck of the world’s largest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), March 17, 2024. The custom of baptizing a child in the ship's bell originated in the Royal Navy. The bell is filled with water and used as a christening bowl for the ceremony, after which the child's name is etched onto the bell. Ford is in port at Naval Station Norfolk following an eight-month deployment to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Apprentice Alexander Casco)
