Col. Chad Caldwell, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, overlooks the emergency spillway at Folsom Dam in Folsom, California, during a visit from South Pacific Division leadership on January 30, 2024. The spillway was a joint project of USACE and the Bureau of Reclamation, which operates Folsom Dam, completed in 2017. The ongoing Folsom Dam Raise, spearheaded by the Sacramento District, aims to raise Folsom Dam’s component facilities by 3.5 feet to increase the temporary capacity of the reservoir in extreme flood conditions.
