This #FortRileyFriday we continue our look at buildings that made up the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Camp. The WPA was responsible for nearly $4-million in construction and infrastructure improvements on post in the 1930s. The WPA Camp was located to the south and west of Main Post between the Union Pacific railroad tracks and the Kansas River.
Building 317 Marshall Avenue was built in 1935 as a warehouse facility for the WPA Camp. The exterior building has changed very little over the years while the interior has been modernized. Today, building 317 is home to City Light and Power (CLP.) CLP took control of the electric utility on Fort Riley in March of 2018 as part of the of the privatization of utilities on post. In fact, CLP owns, operates and maintains the electrical distribution systems for military bases around the United States. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to: operation, maintenance, capital upgrades, renewals and replacements, emergency response services, design and engineering, and coordination studies.
