Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility Docking Officer Lt. Connor Reasoner Blasch, second from left, oversees the repositioning of a caisson back into place following the undocking of the Virginia-class attack submarine USS Hawaii (SSN 776) from Dry Dock 1, Sept. 27, 2023. The caisson is the vessel which forms the watertight seal at the entrance to a dry-dock. Each undocking is a complex evolution that requires teamwork across the entire shipyard to ensure a safe and on-time event. This undocking is a major milestone in the submarine’s Depot Modernization Period (DMP), a scheduled mid-life modernization of the Virginia Class Submarine’s major ship’s systems.
