The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers logo is visible onboard the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet (R3F) Heavy Capacity Fleet, supporting the Upper Ohio Navigation Project at Montgomery Locks and Dam in Monaca, Pennsylvania, Oct. 25, 2023.
The Pittsburgh District will replace the current 360-foot auxiliary chamber with a much wider and longer 600-foot chamber that can fit up to 9 barges at one time. Pittsburgh District employees, USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division Regional Rivers Repair Fleet employees, and contractors are working to execute work on the project.
Montgomery Locks and Dam is part of the Upper Ohio navigation system, which sees 15 to 20 million tons of materials pass through its river chambers annually. The Upper Ohio Navigation Project is expected to support 28,800 jobs over its construction life, and 5,400 jobs annually after completion. The project is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
