U.S. Army Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, retired, gives an acceptance speech during the 2002 Congressional Medal of Honor Convention's Patriot Awards Banquet held in Shreveport, La., Sept. 12, 2002. The speech occurred during the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's hosting of its annual event honoring Medal of Honor recipients. Schwarzkopf received the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's Patriot's Award, which is the society's highest award. It is presented to a distinguished American who exemplifies the ideals that make the United States strong, according to literature published by the society. The information further explains criteria to win the award as someone who has demonstrated their dedication to freedom, love for fellow man, and allegiance to the flag with a full understanding of its demands. More than 1,600 people attended the banquet, which closed out the three-day convention with events in Shreveport, Bossier City, La., Airman from Barksdale Air Force Base, La., attended the banquet and other events to honor the 81 Medal of Honor recipients who attended this year's convention.
