U.S. Army Maj. Matt Burden, a chaplain assigned to 1st Cavalry Division, provides a spiritual tribute to World War II Army Veteran Staff Sgt. Robert G. Rudd, who was honored for a repatriation funeral service at Fort Cavazos, Texas, Dec. 9, 2023. Staff Sgt. Rudd served with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, and on Jan. 30, 1945, he was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge, when his company attacked enemy forces near Rocherath, Belgium. Enemy artillery fire was reported during this engagement. However, specific details of his death were not discovered in the historical records available. His remains were not identified following the war until 2017, when researchers recovered remains that were identified after forensic analysis. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and many relatives that his legacy of heroism will live on through. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. Myenn LaMotta)
