Tree trunks peek out from the banks of the Napa Creek in Napa, Calif., April 12, 2013. The tree trunks, as well as thousands of native species plantings, will provide habitat for fish and other river species. The environmental restoration work is part of the $14.8 million Napa Creek Project, a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the city of Napa, and the Napa Flood Control and Water Conservation District funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to reduce flood risk for the city. The Corps also widened the creek and installed box culverts – tunnels large enough for a car to drive through – in October 2012 to help move flood water from the creek more quickly to the Napa River and away from homes and businesses.
