Command Master Chief Don Abele, deputy director of the Senior Enlisted Academy, speaks about values and ethics to sea cadets at Naval Station Newport during the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Region 1-3, Petty Officer Leadership Academy. The 11th annual regional academy was attended by sea cadets from the New England area, Indiana, California, Texas, Maryland, and South Carolina. The cadets contingent consisted of six female and 54 male cadets ranging in ages 14 to 18. Cadets received approximately 40 hours of classroom instruction on leadership, management, and counseling. The academy included a pilot Emergency Medicine Seminar in which 10 cadets were certified in CPR, use of the automatic external defibrillator, and as first responders.
