From July 17 through August 18, 2023, Cranfield University’s Cranfield Recovery and Identification of Conflict Casualties (CRICC) team, partner of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), conducted excavations in an effort to find U.S. aircrew lost over Italy during World War II. The CRICC team has partnered with the DPAA since 2019 to investigate and excavate crash and burial sites throughout Europe in an attempt to recover unaccounted-for U.S. service members from past wars. In the photo, from left to right, CRICC team members Tristan Krause, Connor Welty, Trine Olsen, and Dr. Joanne Devlin (University of Tennessee) screen sediment excavated from a crash site in Italy, July 24, 2023 (Photographer Anna Maier and Florance Willmott with CRICC).
