From July 17 through August 18, 2023, Cranfield University’s Cranfield Recovery and Identification of Conflict Casualties (CRICC) team, partner of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), conducted excavations in an effort to find U.S. aircrew lost over Italy during World War II. The CRICC team has partnered with the DPAA since 2019 to investigate and excavate crash and burial sites throughout Europe in an attempt to recover unaccounted-for U.S. service members from past wars. In the photo, from left to right, Dr. David Errickson, Hannah Phillips, Karina Andersson, Tony Hays, and Max Spies excavate a unit during the recovery of a World War II-era crash site in Italy, July 22, 2023 (Photographer Anna Maier and Florance Willmott with CRICC).
