The “battlefield cross” stands at the Missing Airmen Memorial in honor of POW/MIA service members at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Sep. 28, 2023. The memorial was selected as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 24-hour Memorial POW/MIA Ruck/Run/Walk. In 1979, former President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first National POW/MIA Recognition Day to acknowledge families’ concerns to never forget the more than 2,500 servicemembers listed as POW or MIA by the Department of Defense at the end of the Vietnam War.
