Light shines through the exposed part of a KC-135R Stratotanker CFM56 engine since all 44 fan blades were removed as part of a scheduled isochronal inspection on Sept. 8, 2023, at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base, Alabama. This removal of the 44 fan blades from each of the jet’s four engines are replaced after every 1,500 flight hours, which is about every year and a half. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
