Gen. Glen VanHerck, Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, welcomes nearly 30 National Guard, Army and Air Force lieutenant colonels and above to the USNORTHCOM Dual Status Command (DSC) Course 23-04 at the NORAD and USNORTHCOM headquarters on Peterson Space Force Base, Colo., Aug. 22, 2023. VanHerck discussed with the group how they would fit into the USNORTHCOM chain of command if they were activated to fill the DSC role. The National Defense Authorization Act, signed in December 2011, facilitated the use of DSCs to provide unity of effort between state and federal forces in achieving common objectives in a disaster response or in supporting a national event.
