Sgt. Daniel S. Gilland, Arlington, Tenn., a member of the Grenada, Miss. based Detachment 1, Headquarters Detachment, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, lifts Spc. Jeremy Matzek, Louisville, Miss., a member of Company G, 106th Support Battalion, 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, during the 155 BCT's Best Warrior competition, recently held at Camp McCain, Miss. Over a three day period, 32 Soldiers from throughout the Mississippi Army National Guard were challenged by an Army physical fitness test, land navigation course, combatives (hand-to-hand combat), six-mile road march with 30 lb. rucksack, individual weapon qualification, confidence course, written test, and an interview panel composed of brigade command sergeants major. First place and runner-up winners in the Soldier of the Year and Non-Commissioned Officer of the year categories from each major command will compete in the Mississippi Army National Guard's Best Warrior Competition to be held Feb. 18-22, 2013, at the Camp McCain Training Site.
