Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadet Lucas Gum, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District intern, boards the vessel Padre Island, for a tour Aug. 2, 2023. The Padre Island is a “suction hopper dredger” and is currently contracted to dredge parts of Galveston Channel. Gum is a college junior and toured the Padre Island as part of his month-long internship at the Galveston District. Gum attends St. Louis University where he studies aviation and aeronautical science. Gum chose the Galveston District internship because of his interest in engineering.
