Aya Kumakura, Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (MHLW) member, looks at photos of U.S. service members who have been identified from the Battle of Tarawa during a scientific analysis meeting at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, June 8, 2023. Through archaeological recoveries and unilateral turnovers, assemblages of human remains have entered the laboratory that the agency has deemed to be non-U.S. During the visit, members of the MHLW are focusing on remains from the Battle of Tarawa. The remains that are being sampled by the Japanese MHLW are believed to be either Japanese or Korean. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. David Owsianka)
