NORTH MACEDONIA - Meet Air Force Staff Sgt. Charles Corey, a Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) with the 116th Air Support Operation Squadron, trains with the North Macedonian Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) during Defender 23 at the Krivolac Military Training Center.

“We have four JTACs here from the 116th ASOS and we are training with the North Macedonian JTACs and integrating them with ourselves and the Army fire support community,” explained Corey.

JTAC teams control the action of military aircraft engaged in close air support from a forward position. In a mult-national training environment teams from partner nations are able to work together to strengthen the joint fires capability.

Corey enlisted in the Air Force on a different path, but then focused his career on air control, following in his late grandfather’s footsteps. “My grandfather was a combat controller for his career enlistment and it’s something I always wanted to do,” said Corey. “It took me a long time to get here, but it's definitely the best decision I've made since I’ve been in.”

DEFENDER 23 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF) joint exercise designed to enable combat-ready, multi-national forces. DEFENDER 23 demonstrates USAREUR-AF’s ability to aggregate U.S.-based combat power quickly in Eastern Europe, increase lethality of the NATO alliance, build unit readiness in a complex joint, multi-national environment, and leverage host nation capabilities to increase USAREUR-AF’s operational reach. DEFENDER 23 takes place April 22 to June 23 and includes more than 7,000 U.S. and 17,000 multi-national service members from more than 20 nations.
