Chinook helicopters support training for Iowa Army engineer troops at Fort McCoy

A Chinook helicopter with the 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment flies over the cantonment area May 24, 2023, at Fort McCoy, Wis. The Chinook was at the installation supporting training for the 224th Engineer Battalion of the Iowa National Guard. The 224th was completing extended combat training operations at Fort McCoy. The unit regularly completes training at Fort McCoy. According to the U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center’s fact sheet description for the Chinook helicopter, the Chinook is the Army’s only heavy-lift cargo helicopter supporting combat and other critical operations. The Chinook tactically transports forces and associated equipment and provides routine aerial sustainment of maneuver forces. Secondary missions the Chinook executes to support Soldiers and commanders include medical evacuation, search and rescue, parachute drops, disaster relief, and aircraft recovery. The Chinook Block II program provides additional capability to the field with greater reach, increased payload capacity, and an increase in maximum gross weight to 54,000 pounds.
