The ceremony was held in honor of U.S. Army Pfc. John Timothy Lane and Marine Lance Cpl. Marvin Earl Galbraith; Lane was awarded, posthumously, the Distinguished Service Cross for displaying extraordinary heroism by jumping on an enemy grenade that was thrown at his unit during a night battle near Duc Hoa, May 4, 1968. Averkamp was requested to present the Gold Star Lapel Button to both Lane’s surviving sisters while simultaneously representing the unit’s prior lineage and honors. Lane was assigned to Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, before the unit was ultimately reassigned to the 4th Infantry Division in 2014.
