The battlefield cross for Lance Cpl. Curtis Duarte, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, stands at the 1/7 Remembrance Ceremony Nov. 2, 2012. The tradition of the battlefield cross dates back to the Civil War, when a soldier’s boots and rifle were similarly stacked in order to mark graves on the battlefield. The Remembrance Ceremony included a roll call of the names of the six fallen Marines from the unit, a 21-gun salute and remarks from the leaders of the Marines.
