Capt. Ronald Oswald, commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. Russell Dicks, executive officer, and Chief Petty Officer Howard H. Nelson Jr. from Navy Operational Support Center Ventura County, Calif., greet Tanny Sakaniwa, U.S. Army, at the Nikkei Senior Gardens. Full-time support and Navy Reserve sailors visited the facility to spend time with Nisei World War II veterans and learn about their adversity and heroism. Many of the Nisei present were part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service. The Spirit of ’45 event was organized by VITAS Innovative Hospice Care and the Nikkei Senior Gardens to pay tribute to Nisei World War II veterans.
