Melinda Mann, Galveston District, U.S., Army Corps of Engineers Talent Acquisition Specialist, wore denim to work at the district headquarters in Galveston, Texas, April 26, 2023, in support of Denim Day the international movement to prevent sexual assault and support survivors. Denim Day is the longest active sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history, according to denimday.org. The observance began in 1999 when an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction when the man appealed, claiming the young woman’s jeans were too tight for him to remove them forcibly, implying consent, according to the site. The next day, women in Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in solidarity with the rape survivor. This day of action and awareness encourages all to wear denim to combat victim blaming and educate others about sexual violence. U.S. Army photo by Luke Waack.
