Galveston District’s Hydrology and Hydraulics branch presented updates on all the work they’re doing to keep the Texas coast safe and discussed ways to collaborate with the Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network or TCOON annual meeting in Galveston, Texas, April 28, 2023. Members from the Texas General Land Office (TxGLO), the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science (CBI). In 1989, the CBI installed the first state-of-the-art water-level measurement system along the Texas coast in Corpus Christi Bay. In 1991 by legislative mandate, the TCOON became an entity of the State of Texas to facilitate the collection of environmental data for the purposes of studying, planning for, and managing human uses of the Texas Coast. Soon after, CBI began the installation of a network of water-level and data-collection platforms along the Texas Coast that became the TCOON, per NOAA.gov. In 1991 other agencies such as the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, joined the GLO forming a consortium of stakeholders, all providing funding in support of the TCOON.
