U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Terrence Stephens, the officer in charge from 7th Engineer Support Battalion assigned to Marine Corps Engineer Detachment – Palau, gives the opening prayer at a ceremony held in Peleliu, Republic of Palau, April 9, 2023. The Peleliu State Government held the ceremony to commemorate the 8th anniversary of the visit to the state by Their Majesties, Emperor Emeritus Akinito and Empress Emerita Michiko. Guests in attendance included the Ambassador of Japan to Palau, Hiroyuki Orikasa, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Jim Boughner and other members of the diplomatic corps, Republic of Palau President Surangel S. Whipps Jr., Vice President and Minister of Justice J. Uduch Sengebau-Senior, Peleliu State Governor Emais Roberts, Marines from 7th ESB assigned to MCED-Palau, as well as other Palauan government officials, island residents and Japanese visitors.
