U.S. Navy Electronics Technician First Class Zachary McDonald, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery team non-commissioned officer augmentee, screens soil during a recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 26, 2023. In Fiscal Year 2022, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and private partner teams conducted 86 investigation and recovery missions in 37 countries. There were 166 Department of Defense personnel accounted for and 283 accessions of osseous material into Agency laboratories.
Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,581 missing in action service-members from the Vietnam War, in order to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
