    Recovery Mission Daily Operations 23-2VN

U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Joseph McGee, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery team non-commissioned officer augmentee, and a local Vietnamese worker screen soil during a recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 26, 2023. If possible remains are discovered on site, they go through an initial analysis before being brought back to the DPAA laboratory. The DPAA Laboratory is the largest and most diverse skeletal identification laboratory in the world and is staffed by more than 30 anthropologists, archaeologists and forensic odonatologists. In 2008, the lab became the second federal laboratory to pass the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors'-Laboratory Accreditation Board's International Standards Program. It is the only forensic skeletal identification laboratory accredited by the ASCLD-LAB.

Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,581 missing in action service-members from the Vietnam War, in order to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
