U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Nativo Rodriguez, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery team sergeant, places soil in a bucket held by U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Alyssa Simon, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency medic augmentee, while excavating a unit during a recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 26, 2023. DPAA forensic anthropologists use a meticulous grid system and any evidence found during excavation to determine where to dig next. For example, if possible aircraft wreckage is found in the southern portion of a unit, the anthropologist will open another unit to the south of the previous unit to continue pursuing all avenues of recovery.
Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,581 missing in action service-members from the Vietnam War, in order to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
