U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ken Nguyen, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery team Vietnamese linguist augmentee, removes soil during the excavation of a unit during a recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 26, 2023. DNA can be used by the DPAA to support the anthropological and archaeological results from the missing service member’s recovered skeletal remains, along with any associated circumstantial evidence to identify an individual. DNA on its own can be used as the primary means of identification. In addition, DNA analysis can be used to sort sets of highly commingled samples.
Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,581 missing in action service-members from the Vietnam War, in order to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
