Phillip Felton, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) explosives ordnance disposal augmentee, prepares to hand a bucket to another team member during the excavation of a unit during a recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 19, 2023. Soil removed from the unit on this site was placed in buckets to be a sent to a wet screening station, where local Vietnamese workers and recovery team members carefully screen it, placing objects of note aside for further examination .Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,581 missing in action service-members from the Vietnam War, in order to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
