Lt. Col. Jeffrey C. Holt, Cpl. Garrett Carnes and Fred Liebel cruise by the 17th mile of the 37th Marine Corps Marathon in D.C. after having worked together to repair a flat on Carnes' hand-crank cycle Oct. 28, 2012. Holt and Carnes rode in the marathon together and Holt was Carnes former commanding officer when they were both attached to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. Liebel, a Team Semper Fi coach, stopped to help the pair out with the flat. Carnes was injured while serving in Afghanistan in February after an IED exploded causing him to lose parts of both legs. The three were among the 23,864 starters in the race who came from across the United States and 47 countries to run in the world's ninth largest marathon. The Marine Corps Marathon was created to promote physical fitness, generate community goodwill and showcase the organizational skills of the Marine Corps. Holt is from Dallas. Carnes is from Mooresville, N.C. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Mark Fayloga)
