Lt. Col. Jeffrey C. Holt, a cyclist participating in the 37th Marine Corps Marathon, examines the flat tire of Cpl. Garrett Carnes, a cyclist with Team Semper Fi, near the 17th mile of the "People's Marathon" in D.C. Oct. 28, 2012. Holt and Carnes rode in the marathon together and Holt was Carnes former commanding officer when they were both attached to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. Carnes was injured while serving in Afghanistan in February after an IED exploded causing him to lose parts of both legs. Holt and Carnes were two of the 23,864 starters in the race who came from across the United States and 47 countries to run in the world's ninth largest marathon. The Marine Corps Marathon was created to promote physical fitness, generate community goodwill and showcase the organizational skills of the Marine Corps. Holt is from Dallas. Carnes is from Mooresville, N.C. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Mark Fayloga)
