Carnes, from Mooresville, N.C., was injured while serving in Afghanistan in February after an IED exploded causing him to lose parts of both legs. The race started between Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, between the country's fallen heroes and those actively protecting our nation. Carnes, formerly with India Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, was one of the 23,864 starters in the race who came from across the United States and 47 countries to run in the world's ninth largest marathon. The Marine Corps Marathon was created to promote physical fitness, generate community goodwill and showcase the organizational skills of the Marine Corps. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt.
