U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, surveys the electromagnetic spectrum during a visit, boards, search, and seizure on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s tank landing ship JS Osumi (LST-4001) in the Pacific Ocean, March 4, 2023. The VBSS exercise refined Marines’ skills in maritime interdiction operations by incorporating real world scenarios. Iron Fist is an annual bi-lateral exercise designed to increase interoperability and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
