The amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) ballasts after deploying a landing craft, utility during a search and rescue exercise in the Pacific Ocean, Mar. 5, 2023. The Navy conducted the SAR exercise alongside the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force so they are better prepared to react to emergencies while out at sea. Iron Fist 23 is an annual bilateral exercise designed to increase interoperability and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the JMSDF.
