WASHINGTON NAVY YARD (Feb. 24, 2023) Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) Director Samuel J. Cox, U.S. Navy rear admiral (retired), speaks during an award ceremony at the National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN). The ceremony honored the efforts of Robert Kraft, Director of Subsea Operations at Vulcan Inc., and Paul Mayer, lead researcher and Remotely Operated Vehicle operator at Vulcan Inc., for their work in locating and documenting over 20 U.S. Navy shipwrecks. These included USS Indianapolis (CA 35), USS Ward (DD 139), USS Lexington (CV 2), USS Juneau (CL 52), USS Helena (CL-50), USS Wasp (CV 7), USS Hornet (CV 8), USS Strong (DD 467), USS Johnston (DD 557), and USS St. Lo (CVE 63). The data collected allowed NHHC's underwater archaeologists to analyze and interpret the wreck sites for their long-term protection.
