WASHINGTON NAVY YARD (Feb. 24, 2023) Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) Director Samuel J. Cox, U.S. Navy rear admiral (retired), presents Robert Kraft, Director of Subsea Operations at Vulcan Inc., with a Navy Distinguished Service Award at the National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN). Kraft and the R/V Petrel team located and documented over 20 U.S. Navy shipwrecks including USS Indianapolis (CA 35), USS Ward (DD 139), USS Lexington (CV 2), USS Juneau (CL 52), USS Helena (CL-50), USS Wasp (CV 7), USS Hornet (CV 8), USS Strong (DD 467), USS Johnston (DD 557), and USS St. Lo (CVE 63). The data collected allowed NHHC's underwater archaeologists to analyze and interpret the wreck sites for their long-term protection.
