Seaman Christopher Sappey, a member of deck department on Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB 10) operates the crane to launch the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) for small boat operations in Antarctica, Jan. 17, 2023. The Polar Star conducted small boat operations for personnel training in the McMurdo Sound during Operation Deep Freeze 2023. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, most inhospitable continent on the globe, and each trip requires careful planning and coordination.
