This Fort Riley Friday we feature the Ogden Monument. Brevet-Major Edmund A. Ogden was considered the founder of Fort Riley. He died in 1855 during a cholera outbreak.
In his honor, in 1865 a stone monument was placed on a prominent hilltop near today's Outdoor Chapel. This monument quickly became known as the geographic center of the United States. (It is not, and no such wording was put on the monument.)
By 1923, cattle had damaged the original Ogden Monument and an identical marker was placed along a nearby road to increase its visibility. This monument still stands today near the Post Cemetery.
Meanwhile, the original Ogden Monument was placed near the Cavalry Museum where it can be seen today. The base of the original monument, inscribed with the words "Original Ogden Monument" still exists adjacent to the gravel road leading to the Outdoor Chapel.
