The 13th ESC's chaplains hosted a retreat to connect soldiers with the outdoors and animal therapeutics at the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) Horse Riding stable, today.
U.S. Army Ch. Jeffrey "Father" Whorton, the unit command chaplain, said the intent was to put soldiers in a different environment and take their minds off their troubles to give them a new perspective. "When you break that routine you have a chance to reset," he said. He continued that it allows them to care for their souls and be conduits of grace and mercy to others in our unit.
"Beauty can arrest us," said Wharton, speaking on the location and the unscripted value of the animals and lakeside location.
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Sean P. Davis, unit commander, visited and emphasized to the soldiers how important their spiritual and mental welfare are. Wharton believes his appearance was a sign of respect for the formation's caregivers, like the chaplains and Sexual Harassment/Sexual Assault Response and Prevention victim advocates, who also attended.
